Bungee, Drones and a Minor Flesh Wound
As soon as I dropped my bag down in my hostel I knew I had to do it. I knew that any hesitation would just cause me to put it off until the next day, and the next, until it was time to move on. I am of course talking about booking my very first bungee jump! The Monteverde eXtremo Park bungee jump in is the highest bungee in not only Costa Rica, but all of Latin America. The platform is just a wobbly red carriage which rolls on cables suspended between two mountain peaks. The lush, green rainforest sits in a valley 143m below – just describing it brings back the butterflies!
I woke up in the morning feeling really good, until I realised that I was about to chuck myself off a platform very high in the air with some rubber tied to my feet. Why on earth would you want to do that I hear you ask? Well the jump came recommended from a mate I met in La Fortuna (next to the Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica) and after watching his POV video I knew I had to do it too. I’d been to Queenstown a couple of times and always wussed out, so I figured it was now or never!
I was picked up in a bus with 10 others and then headed up the mountain. As it turned out I was the only one doing bungee jumping – everyone else had gone for the slightly safer option of zip lining. The closer we got to the park, the more nervous I became – I started to feel the eggs, beans and rice from breakfast rumbling around in my gut.
Now I’ve recently acquired a DJI Mavic Pro drone and I had the brilliant idea to film myself jumping to my imminent death – sounds pretty simple right? What could go wrong! Well I can tell you that I was a billion times more nervous about flying it out of the carriage, putting it into position and then bringing it back to the platform safely than I was about the jump itself. Considering I had only had the drone for a little under 2 weeks at the time I feel like I was either extremely brave or extremely stupid for attempting it. I think it actually made the jump so much easier because I didn’t think about it at all!
In the end everything went smoothly! Well… almost everything. I experienced my first drone related injury as I was flying it back to the platform – but you can watch it for yourself below! Please excuse my yipping and yee-hawwing, there’s just something about that pink party suit that gets me going!
I have never felt an adrenaline rush like this before and I can’t wait to cross off more and more bungee jumps from around the world! A massive thanks to Dan and Isaias at Monteverde eXtremo Park for this crazy experience, I don’t think I’ll ever have a Monday morning quite as exhilarating as this one!
